Boosting Nasarawa’s Mining Sector: Three New Licences Secured
The recent conferment of three mining licences to Nasarawa State Government for the extraction of gold, tin, and lithium marks a pivotal stride in the advancement of the state’s mining sector. This noteworthy development was disclosed by the esteemed Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, during a formal visit to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, in Abuja.
The primary objective of the visit was to apprise the minister of the ongoing construction of a sizeable lithium plant and to deliberate on the ministry’s endeavours to secure mining sites and bolster the advancement of the mining sector nationwide. This initiative follows closely on the heels of the commitment made by the Minister of Solid Minerals to mitigate the environmental impact of mining operations. In a meeting with the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, Alake avowed to enact legislation aimed at minimising the adverse effects of mining on the environment, in accordance with international standards.
Governor Sule conveyed his gratitude to the Honourable Minister for his pivotal role in facilitating the acquisition of the gold, tin, and lithium mining licences. Leveraging his background in the private sector, the governor underscored the significance of implementing public-private partnership arrangements to ensure efficient administration of the mining venture and equitable participation to maximise benefits for the state.
In response, Minister Alake commended Nasarawa state for its resolute commitment to developing mineral resources, deeming it as a valuable partner in propelling the solid minerals sector in the state and across Nigeria. He also acknowledged Governor Sule’s unwavering support for the construction of the lithium plant, highlighting the significance of the state’s collaboration with the Federal Government in this undertaking.
Throughout the meeting, discussions centred on the regrettable Ibadan explosion incident. While investigations are underway, Minister Alake stressed the ministry’s circumspect approach in assigning blame without conclusive evidence. He also underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing the security of natural resources, including minerals, forests, and the marine economy, as evidenced by the establishment of a dedicated committee at the Federal Executive Council.
Accompanying Governor Sule during the visit were former governor, Tanko Al-Makura, and the Attorney-General of Nasarawa State, Abdulkarim Kana, among others. Their presence further underscored the state’s proactive engagement in advancing its mining sector under the leadership of Governor Sule.
The acquisition of the mining licences epitomises a momentous milestone for Nasarawa state and a testament to its dedication to fostering sustainable economic growth through the development of its abundant mineral resources.
