Ibadan explosion: Tragedy Strikes as Death Toll Climbs to Five
The recent explosion in Ibadan has resulted in the loss of five lives, with the discovery of two additional bodies at the site on Thursday. Mr. Fatai Owoseni, the Special Adviser on Security to the Oyo State governor, provided this update, expressing profound sorrow over the incident.
According to Owoseni, the explosives responsible for the explosion had been stored over a prolonged period, rendering them highly volatile and susceptible to detonation when exposed to heat. He stressed the necessity for heightened vigilance within the community, particularly by the Old Bodija residents association, and revealed various documents and licenses obtained for the storage of the explosives, which are now undergoing verification by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
In response to the structural damage caused by the explosion, Professor Temitope Alonge, Head of the Emergency Situation Room for the Ibadan explosion, disclosed that affected buildings would undergo integrity tests. Those found to be structurally unsound would be demolished, with the safety of occupants being the foremost concern. Alonge also reaffirmed the importance of psychosocial support for those affected by the incident, underscoring the need for counselling and assistance in the recovery process.
Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, the state Commissioner for Health, provided an update on the condition of the victims, stating that while some have been discharged from the hospital, those still receiving treatment are in stable conditions. The Oyo House of Assembly also paid tribute to the lives lost in the explosion and called for a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
In light of the tragic events, it is imperative for the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The safety and well-being of the residents of Ibadan are paramount, and it is essential to ensure that such incidents are not repeated. The need for collaboration between state and federal initiatives to address illegal mining and the mishandling of explosives is also crucial in safeguarding the community.
As recovery efforts continue and the affected individuals receive the necessary support, it is hoped that the authorities will take the appropriate steps to prevent such tragic events from recurring. The unity and resilience of the community will be integral in overcoming this difficult time and fostering a safe and secure environment for all.
