The recent unfortunate explosions in Ibadan have resulted in the recovery of two additional bodies, bringing the death toll to five. Furthermore, 77 individuals have sustained injuries, and 58 houses have been damaged, some irreparably. In response to these tragic events, security agents are actively pursuing the suspects, and the House of Representatives plans to initiate a thorough investigation.

During a recent press briefing, Prof. Temitope Alonge, Incident Manager of the Emergency Situation Room, and Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetumobi, Oyo State Commissioner for Health, provided updates on the ongoing rescue efforts. Dr. Ajetumobi reported that many of the survivors under medical care are now in stable condition, with some having already been discharged. She also mentioned the retrieval of five bodies thus far, with the possibility of discovering more amidst the wreckage.

In reaction to the disaster, the House of Representatives has indicated its intent to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the explosions. The Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN) has also denounced the unauthorized storage of explosives in residential areas, emphasizing that such actions violate regulations governing their proper acquisition, handling, storage, and usage. Additionally, the association has voiced its support for the government’s efforts against those responsible for the illegal storage of explosives.

Furthermore, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has issued an Executive Order prohibiting traditional rulers from issuing consent letters for mining throughout the state. This decision was prompted by the significant hazards related to the widespread issuance of consent letters, which have been linked to the state’s security challenges, particularly in relation to banditry.

Both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosions and have demanded the apprehension of those responsible. Additionally, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has extended condolences to the people and government of Oyo State, urging a comprehensive probe to prevent similar incidents in the future.

It has also been reported that members of the state Council of Obas and Chiefs will convene with Governor Makinde to address the issue of insecurity and illegal mining in the state, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Moreover, the Bodija Estate Residents Association (BERA) has taken the initiative to visit the victims of the explosions, offering both government and community-based support to those affected.

Public figures such as former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Kalu, and Senator Austin Akobundu have expressed their condolences and support for the victims and their families, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice in the aftermath of this devastating event. Their thoughts and prayers are with the affected individuals, as they underscore the importance of holding those responsible accountable to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The recent explosions in Ibadan have underscored the immediate need for regulatory measures and proper handling of explosive materials to ensure the safety and security of communities across Nigeria. It is imperative that proactive and preventive measures are implemented to safeguard the lives and properties of citizens.
