Illegal Mining Crackdown: Enugu Government Takes Action
In an effort to address the ongoing issue of illegal mining in Enugu, the state government has taken decisive action by apprehending six individuals and seizing seven trucks in Obollo-Afor. This crackdown follows the government’s prohibition of mining in the state, with a stern warning that any violation of the ban will result in strict sanctions being enforced.
Dr. Kingsley Nnaji, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy and Solid Minerals, in collaboration with the Divisional Police Officer of Obollo-Afor, CSP Ignatius Attah, conducted a visit to the mining site that resulted in the arrests. The visit was prompted by information that illegal mining activities were continuing at locations that had been sealed off by the government following the ban.
Dr. Nnaji emphasized that the government’s position is not a blanket opposition to mining activities, but rather a strong determination to halt illegal operations that have led to environmental degradation and pollution of essential water sources for local communities. He stressed that the government had previously sealed these mining sites and that the current actions were in response to a blatant violation of court orders.
The crackdown also entailed the confiscation of vehicles and equipment found at these illegal sites, with the individuals involved being required to cooperate with the authorities and comply with all necessary regulations before their property is returned. Additionally, the government issued a warning to those involved in the illicit purchase of coal from these illegal mines, stating that buyers will also face legal consequences.
CSP Ignatius Attah reaffirmed the commitment of the police force to support the government’s efforts in eradicating illegal mining activities in Enugu. He disclosed that the arrested individuals were taken to the police headquarters in Enugu to provide their statements and were subsequently detained. The confiscated vehicles included four trailers, one pay loader Caterpillar, one low bed, and a truck.
These actions by the government are part of a wider initiative to clamp down on illegal mining and send a clear message to those involved in such activities. Dr. Nnaji also issued a warning to businesses leasing out vehicles and equipment, cautioning them against engaging with illegal miners as their assets would be confiscated if found in such operations.
The crackdown on illegal mining activities demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the environment from rampant exploitation. It also sends a strong message to those engaging in illegal mining that there will be consequences for their actions. With this decisive action, the Enugu State Government is taking a proactive stance in ensuring sustainable and responsible mining practices in the state.
