In an effort to crack down on illegal mining activities, a joint taskforce established by the Kogi State Government has intercepted 21 trucks of coal suspected to be proceeds of illegal mining in the state. This operation was disclosed in a statement issued by licensed and legal coal miners in Kogi State.

According to this statement, the taskforce, which was established by the Kogi State Government in response to a ban on illegal mining activities announced by the Federal Government, confiscated the products between December 18, 2023, and January 7, 2024.

The joint taskforce, which comprises the police, NSCDC, the State Security Service, Federal Mines Office, Kogi State, State Ministry of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, and Kogi State Vigilante Service (KSVS), worked diligently to impound the 21 trucks loaded with coal, totaling 945 tonnes.

On January 8, 2024, an application was submitted before the Federal High Court, Lokoja, seeking an order of forfeiture of the 945 tonnes of coal to the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development. The court granted an interim forfeiture order on January 18, 2024, directing that the notice of order be posted in public places. This includes the Federal High Court, State High Court, and various mining sites in the Ankpa LGA, where the products were impounded, to allow interested parties to contest the order.

Following these developments, 24 licensed mining companies visited Kogi State on January 19, to express their appreciation to the state government and the security agencies for their effective action in containing illegal mining operations. They also offered their input to enhance the operations of the joint taskforce.

The licensed and legal coal miners urged other state governments and security agencies to follow suit in combating illegal mining to protect the economy and security of the country.

It is evident that the Kogi State Government, in collaboration with other relevant authorities, is committed to eradicating the negative impact of illegal mining on the economy and security of Nigeria. This decisive action sets a strong precedent for other states to emulate, and it sends a clear message to those involved in illegal mining that their activities will not be tolerated.

This collaborative effort between the government, security agencies, and licensed miners highlights the importance of upholding the law and safeguarding the natural resources of the nation. The call for sustained action against illegal mining is a crucial step in protecting the country’s economy and security.

As we witness these efforts to combat illegal mining, it is imperative for other states and relevant stakeholders to join forces and support this cause, ultimately contributing to the overall development and prosperity of Nigeria.
