High-Insecurity: Calls on Nigerian Government for Action Against Bandit Sponsors

0

The recent surge in banditry activities in Nigeria, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, has raised grave concerns among citizens. Of particular worry is the mystery surrounding the identity of the perpetrators and their sponsors.

Former Senator Shehu Sani has voiced concerns over the substantial amounts of money being paid as ransom to secure the release of abducted citizens from the clutches of these criminals. He has questioned why the foot soldiers of these crimes, who are mostly young and poor, do not appear to benefit from the large sums of money they handle.

This sentiment was echoed by former federal lawmaker, Hon. Sani Muhammad Takori, who has alleged that certain influential individuals are behind the surge in banditry activities in Zamfara State. Additionally, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State revealed that the financiers of the bandits terrorizing his state are known to security agents.

Mr. Akogwu John, a security expert, has urged the government to expose the sponsors of these criminal acts to dissuade others from similar actions. He has also called on citizens to take a stand against these perpetrators, especially those profiting from resources in affected areas.

The bandits have expanded their operations to the Kajuru forest in Southern Kaduna, where they are wreaking havoc in the FCT and its neighbouring states. According to a local security monitoring firm, over 200 violent attacks have occurred in the FCT, resulting in numerous casualties and abductions.

In light of the escalating insecurity, there have been calls for President Bola Tinubu to engage with stakeholders across the country to address the prevailing security issues. Additionally, there are requests for the establishment of local police services at the state and local government levels.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has affirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the security challenges in Abuja in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

It is evident that the security landscape in Nigeria requires urgent attention, and it is imperative that the government takes decisive action to stem the tide of banditry and insecurity. The safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens should be paramount, and concerted efforts are needed to tackle the root causes of these criminal activities.
