Nigeria Leads the Way in African Mining Development
Nigeria has achieved a noteworthy milestone in the global mining industry by assuming the role of chair of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group. Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, was unanimously elected as the inaugural chairman of this esteemed group. The announcement was made during a meeting at the 30th edition of the Investing in Africa Indaba, held in Cape Town, South Africa.
The event, attended by mineral development ministers from various African nations, showcased the collective commitment to unlocking the potential of mineral resources on the continent. With more than 15 countries already pledging their support, the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, under Nigeria’s leadership, is poised to make significant strides in the mining sector.
During the signing of the resolution, Dr. Alake highlighted the importance of African leaders coming together to ensure that the continent maximizes the benefits derived from its abundant mineral resources. Emphasising the importance of value addition as a prerequisite for investment in the mining sector, Dr. Alake urged African countries to speak with one voice on this critical matter.
In his address, Dr. Alake articulated the urgent need for African nations to work cooperatively in the face of increasing global demand for critical metals essential for the energy transition. He stressed that the days of exploitation without accountability are over, and unity among African nations is crucial in ensuring the responsible and sustainable exploitation of mineral resources.
This initiative follows a previous gathering in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Nigeria and Uganda rallied African Ministers of Solid Minerals/Mineral Resources at the Future Minerals Forum. The focus of the meeting was to unite and advocate for value addition in the mining sector as a means to boost the economy of African countries.
Dr. Alake underscored the need for consistent regulations and laws governing the mining sector across African countries. This unified approach will eliminate the divide and rule tactics previously employed by external actors, demonstrating sincerity of purpose and garnering greater respect on the global stage. He also expressed Nigeria’s unwavering support for the group’s objectives, reaffirming the country’s commitment to driving positive change in the African mining industry.
The appointment of Nigeria as the chair of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group marks a significant step forward for the continent, as it seeks to assert itself as a key player in the global mining landscape. With a shared vision and collaborative efforts, African nations are poised to chart a new course towards sustainable mining practices and economic prosperity.
