Nigeria and U.S. Collaborate on Mining Development Strategy

In a recent meeting with the United States Deputy Chief of Mission, David Greene, the Nigerian government has taken steps to establish a working group aimed at formulating strategies for partnership in mining development. This initiative was disclosed by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, during the Investing in Africa Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Nigerian government delegation met with a U.S. government delegation, led by Senior Advisor to the U.S. President on Energy and Infrastructure, Amos Hochstein. During the meeting, Hochstein emphasized the longstanding relationship between the U.S. and Nigeria, spanning various sectors. He expressed the U.S.’s interest in collaborating with Nigeria to facilitate investments in the mining ecosystem. This collaboration would encompass infrastructural development, technical assistance for scaling up mining operations, and investment opportunities in the sector.

Hochstein conveyed the U.S.’s willingness to work with Nigeria by sharing expertise with the Nigerian team and engaging with companies to identify mutually beneficial opportunities. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of addressing infrastructure needs to make these investments more appealing. He stressed the necessity of reliable electricity for establishing a sustainable and environmentally friendly mining sector. As part of this effort, the U.S. government is already working with Nigeria to explore clean energy options that can be financed.

The collaboration between Nigeria and the U.S. holds great potential for advancing mining development in Nigeria and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships.
