Joint Efforts to Combat Illegal Mining in Oyo and Osun States
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Customs Service have combined their efforts to address the issue of illegal mining in Oyo and Osun States. This collaborative initiative was announced during a visit by the EFCC’s Acting Zonal Commander in Ibadan, ACE I Halima Mustafa Rufa’u, to the Oyo/Osun State Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba on August 17, 2023.
During the visit, Rufa’u expressed her concern about the detrimental impact of illegal mining activities on the national economy. She emphasized the misuse of natural resources by unscrupulous individuals for personal gain, rather than for the development of the country, including improving healthcare, reducing poverty, and enhancing the educational system. Rufa’u also underscored the EFCC’s dedication to enforcing laws against illegal miners and combating corruption in this sector.
In response, Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba acknowledged the EFCC’s efforts in combating illegal mining activities and cybercrime in the State. He expressed confidence in the competence of both organizations to effectively address this issue and assured that they are prepared to collaborate in the fight against illegal mining activities.
This visit comes at a time when there has been an increase in illegal mining activities in the State, making it a crucial opportunity for the EFCC and the Nigeria Customs Service to join forces in tackling this menace.
The collaboration between these two agencies reflects a proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining. It highlights the importance of cooperation and synergy in enforcing laws and regulations to protect natural resources and promote sustainable economic growth.
By working together, the EFCC and the Nigeria Customs Service aim to uphold the rule of law, ensure accountability, and combat illegal activities that undermine the country’s development. This joint effort sends a clear message that illegal mining will not be tolerated, and those involved will be held accountable.
In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of the EFCC and the Nigeria Customs Service to combat illegal mining in Oyo and Osun States demonstrate a commitment to upholding the law and safeguarding the country’s natural resources.
