Unlocking Nigeria’s Mining Potential: NMGS Urges Government to Create Wealth
The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has formally appealed to the government to fully exploit the potential of the mining sector in order to engage young entrepreneurs, boost the nation’s economy, and create wealth. President of the NMGS, Professor Akinade Olatunji, has underscored the need to reform the sector and address issues such as illegal mining, which is currently depriving the country of its valuable resources.
During an interview with journalists in Jos, Professor Olatunji emphasized the negative impact of unregulated mining activities and called for a concerted effort to reposition the sector with the use of appropriate technology and personnel. He highlighted the importance of strengthening and implementing relevant laws to curb illegal mining activities and emphasized the need for investment in retooling and equipping the Mining Inspectorate offices.
Professor Olatunji also stressed the need to acknowledge the distinction between illegal mining and artisanal mining. He explained that illegal mining is any form of mining carried out in violation of the country’s laws, while artisanal miners use basic tools and methods. He urged the government to provide training and employment opportunities for individuals willing to work in the sector, as well as invest in technology to monitor and regulate mining activities effectively.
The upcoming 59th Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the NMGS, themed “Emerging Global Perspectives, Trends and Sustainable Development of Minerals and Energy Resources,” will address various sub-themes such as the potential of artisanal and small-scale mining, renewable energy opportunities, water resource management, geosciences and building collapse, as well as medical geology, geo-tourism, and geo-heritage.
The event, scheduled to take place in Jos, Plateau State, from the 17th to the 22nd of March, 2024, will feature paper presentations, excursions, quiz competitions, and other activities aimed at addressing the pressing issues in Nigeria’s mining sector. It serves as a crucial platform for stakeholders to come together and exchange ideas on how to unlock the wealth creation potentials of the mining industry.
In conclusion, the NMGS has urged the Federal Government to take concrete steps to reinvigorate the mining sector and create opportunities for sustainable wealth creation. By investing in the necessary infrastructure, manpower, and technology, Nigeria can overcome the challenges posed by illegal mining and harness the full potential of its mineral and energy resources.
