The Nigerian Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO) has experienced a notable rise in the volume of applications for mineral titles subsequent to the implementation of the Electronic Mining Cadastre System Plus (EMCS+). Dr. Obadiah Nkom, the Director General of NMCO, reported a total of 55,118 applications have been received since the inception of the new system.

Dr. Nkom disclosed this achievement during a recent orientation workshop on the integration of EMCS+ at the 59th Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) Annual International Conference and Exhibition. He underscored the significance of the mining cadastre system in the governance and oversight of mineral titles nationwide.

The shift from the prior internet-based system to the digitalized EMCS+ has facilitated a more engaging and accessible platform for stakeholders in the mining sector. Dr. Nkom emphasised the enhanced services and heightened visibility of the system, offering a more streamlined process for the application and modification of mineral titles.

In addressing the issue of illegal mining, Dr. Nkom acknowledged the challenges but assured that NMCO is taking proactive measures to ensure that all mining activities are conducted with the appropriate licenses. He underscored the ongoing efforts to organize artisanal miners into cooperatives and provide them with necessary support and extension services through the Artisanal and Small Scale department within the ministry.

The Executive Secretary further emphasised the critical role of NMCO in managing the granting and administration of licenses, highlighting the importance of a functional and transparent cadastre system in the mining sector. It was stressed that a transparent and efficient licensing regime is essential for the sector’s development and to attract potential investors.

The introduction of EMCS+ undeniably brought about positive changes in the mining sector, with a significant increase in the number of applications for mineral titles. NMCO’s commitment to ensuring a well-organized and transparent system sets a promising path for the future of the mining industry in Nigeria.
