Benue Governor Halts Mining Operations in Response to Security Threats
The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has taken a resolute stance against the unlawful mining activities within the state by issuing a directive for the immediate cessation of all mining operations. This decision was conveyed during a meeting with the Benue chapter of the Miners Association of Nigeria in Makurdi, with the primary objective of addressing security concerns and safeguarding the welfare of the populace.
Incidents concerning security threats and the pollution of water sources, notably in Kwande, prompted Governor Alia to take decisive action. Alongside the suspension of mining activities, the governor mandated the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to compile comprehensive data on all miners operating within the state. The purpose of this revalidation exercise is to scrutinise the mining sector and clamp down on illegal mining activities, thus ensuring the safety and prosperity of the citizens.
Underlining the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, Governor Alia cautioned against any form of illegality within the mining sector. Furthermore, he underscored the significance of augmenting the Internally Generated Revenue while upholding law and order. His stance was bolstered by Mr. Fidelis Mnyim, the state Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, who underscored the imperative to curb illegal mining activities without hindering legitimate mining operations.
The Governor’s directive garnered cooperation from the Nigeria Miners Association in Benue, with a commitment to collaborate in cleansing the mining sector. Additionally, the Federal Ministry of Mining and Solid Minerals pledged to work in tandem with the state government in this pursuit. However, the meeting also shed light on the challenges encountered by miners, including issues related to multiple taxation and the scarcity of essential mining equipment.
The initiative to suspend mining activities exemplifies a proactive measure by the Benue State government to address security apprehensions and avert environmental hazards imposed by illegal mining. It also presents an opportunity to fortify regulatory measures within the mining sector, ensuring that legitimate miners can operate within a conducive working environment.
