The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, commonly referred to as NSCDC, has disclosed that illegal mining activities are persisting in Borno, despite the government’s prohibition of such operations in the state. Farouq Musa-Boyi, the NSCDC Commandant in Borno, revealed this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri.

Musa-Boyi underscored that a significant portion of the illegal mining activities is concentrated in Bayo Local Government Area, particularly in Wuyo, Jaradali, and Balbaya villages. These unregistered artisans have been causing severe environmental damage in the area as they continue to extract various minerals such as Feldspar, Limestone, Kaolin, Potash, Iron-Ore, Quartz, Magnetite, Diatomite, Trona, Mica, Silica Sand, Gypsum, Granite, Flutters Earth, and Uranium.

Despite the government’s ban on illegal mining, these individuals have blatantly disregarded the regulations and continue to exploit the state’s natural resources. Musa-Boyi emphasized that the Borno government has issued stern warnings to the illegal miners, outlining dire consequences for those who fail to comply with the ban.

The NSCDC is actively pursuing these illegal miners, aiming to hold them accountable for their actions and bring them to justice for violating the law. The organization is committed to cracking down on these defiant individuals and ensuring that they face the appropriate legal repercussions for their unlawful activities.

It is evident that the persistence of illegal mining poses a serious threat to the environment and natural resources of Borno. The wanton exploitation of minerals without proper regulation not only damages the ecosystem but also deprives the state of valuable resources that could contribute to its development and prosperity.

In light of these developments, it is crucial for the relevant authorities to intensify their efforts in monitoring and enforcing the ban on illegal mining. By collaborating with law enforcement agencies and implementing stringent measures, the government can deter these unlawful practices and safeguard the state’s natural resources for the benefit of its citizens.

The detrimental impact of illegal mining activities cannot be overlooked, and it is imperative to address this issue with urgency and determination. Through effective enforcement of the ban and strict penalties for offenders, the government can reinforce the importance of compliance and discourage individuals from engaging in unauthorized mining operations.

In conclusion, the prevalence of illegal mining in Borno is a pressing concern that demands immediate intervention and decisive action. The NSCDC’s vigilance in pursuing these illegal miners is a commendable effort towards upholding the rule of law and protecting the state’s resources. It is essential for all stakeholders to collaborate in addressing this issue and safeguarding Borno from the adverse effects of unauthorized mining activities.
