A Surge in Application for Mineral Titles in Nigeria: A Sign of Economic Growth
The Nigerian Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO) has observed a significant increase in applications for mineral titles, with an impressive 55,118 applications received over the course of 16 months. Dr. Obadiah Nkom, the esteemed Director General of the NMCO, imparted this exciting news during a sensitisation workshop on the adoption of the electronic mining cadastre system plus (EMCS+) at the 59th Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) Annual International Conference and Exhibition (AICE).
This surge in applications indicates a growing interest in the mining sector, serving as a promising indicator of economic growth. The NMCO has been instrumental in driving this progress, streamlining the application process through the EMCS+ strategy. Dr. Nkom underscored the agency’s dedication to continually enhancing and facilitating robust applications for mineral titles, further advancing the development of the mining industry in Nigeria.
The implementation of the electronic mining cadastral system signifies a significant milestone in the country’s mining sector. As Dr. Nkom elucidated, the transition to this advanced system has improved the accessibility and interactivity of the application process. Stakeholders now have unprecedented access and visibility into the system, fostering greater engagement and efficiency.
In addition to driving economic growth, the NMCO is committed to ensuring the responsible and lawful practice of mining activities. Dr. Nkom addressed the pressing issue of illegal mining, emphasizing that the agency is diligently working to enforce licensing regulations. While acknowledging that achieving perfect organization and compliance is an ongoing effort, he underscored the NMCO’s commitment to reducing illegal mining activities and promoting responsible mining practices.
To this end, the NMCO has established the Artisanal and Small Scale department within the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development. This department plays a pivotal role in organising artisanal cooperatives and providing essential extension services, thereby empowering and regulating artisanal and small-scale mining activities.
The notable increase in mineral title applications is indicative of the growing potential and opportunities in Nigeria’s mining sector. It reflects the concerted efforts of the NMCO and the mining industry stakeholders to drive sustainable economic development through responsible and innovative mining practices. As the country continues to embrace technological advancements and regulatory reforms, the mining sector is poised for further growth and contribution to the nation’s prosperity.
The upsurge in applications for mineral titles underscores the pivotal role of the mining industry in Nigeria’s economic landscape. With a steadfast focus on regulatory compliance, technological advancement, and stakeholder engagement, the NMCO is spearheading a new era of growth and opportunity in the mining sector.
