The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has recently made a significant arrest concerning illegal mining operations in Nasarawa State. Four Chinese nationals were apprehended at an illegal mining site, specifically in the Karu Local Government Area. This information was relayed by the NSCDC’s public relations officer, Babawale Afolabi, who issued a statement over the weekend detailing the events that led to the arrests.

Afolabi reported that the NSCDC’s specially trained personnel, known as Federal Government Mining Marshals, have been actively working to combat illegal mining, which has been causing significant harm to the nation’s economy. Acting on reliable intelligence, the Mining Marshals discovered the illicit mining site where lithium was being extracted and sold. During a well-executed sting operation, the team successfully apprehended the four Chinese nationals involved in the illegal activities.

Further investigation revealed that the detained individuals admitted to their involvement in the unauthorized mining of lithium. The Mining Marshall Commander, Attah John Onoja, emphasized that the seized minerals would be subject to the regulations stipulated in the Minerals and Mining Act, 2007. The arrested suspects had been summoned for questioning but refused to comply, leading to the decision to pursue legal action against them. As a result, the NSCDC will pursue a court application for the forfeiture of the impounded lithium minerals, with the proceeds to be remitted to the Federal Government.

It was also discovered that the Chinese nationals were operating their illegitimate mining activities without the necessary licensing. Their business venture, known as HOSAN AGRO-ALLIED COMPANY LTD, was found to be lacking the proper certification to engage in such solid mineral-related operations.

The NSCDC’s success in apprehending these individuals reflects the government’s commitment to enforcing mining regulations and safeguarding the nation’s natural resources. It sends a clear message that illegal mining activities will not be tolerated and that those who partake in such activities will be held accountable.

As we commend the NSCDC for their diligent work in addressing illegal mining, it is essential for all stakeholders to cooperate in upholding the laws and regulations governing mining operations. Together, we can ensure the sustainable and lawful utilization of Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources for the benefit of all its citizens.
