Cracking Down on Illegal Mining: Federal Government Makes Headway in Kogi
The recent efforts of the federal government to address illegal mining in Kogi State have yielded substantial progress, as evidenced by the seizure of 10 trucks and the apprehension of individuals involved in the unlawful possession and transportation of minerals.
Mining Marshals, dispatched by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), successfully apprehended 10 suspects along the Itobe-Ajokuta Road in Kogi State. These individuals were found to be in possession of minerals without the requisite letter of identification, thereby contravening the Minerals and Mining Act 2007 and Mining Regulations, 2011.
Subsequent investigations uncovered that the suspects had obtained the minerals from illegal miners in Kogi State, lacking any documentation of legal mining titles, records, or payment of royalties. Furthermore, certain companies were found to have unlawfully engaged third-party agents in the procurement of minerals from a community in Ankpa LGA of Kogi State.
The suspects have been formally charged, with the directors of the implicated companies summoned for questioning.
In a statement to the press, Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah John Onoja, reiterated the unwavering commitment of the paramilitary unit to upholding operational standards and ensuring strict adherence to the laws and regulations governing the mining sector in Nigeria. He also urged all stakeholders to lend their support to the Minister of Solid Minerals in his endeavors to revitalize the Nigerian mining sector.
Recent reports indicate that this crackdown forms part of the minister’s comprehensive agenda to restore integrity and order to the mining industry.
This recent development represents a significant advancement in the reinstatement of legitimacy within the nation’s mining sector, and a vital stride towards ensuring that the exploitation of mineral resources aligns with established laws.
