Federal Government Cracks Down on Illegal Mining, Impounds Ten Trucks and Charges Suspects
The Federal Government has taken resolute action against illegal mining activities by impounding 10 trucks and initiating legal proceedings against suspects for the unlawful possession and transportation of minerals. This enforcement effort is in line with the Minister of Solid Minerals’ 7-point agenda aimed at purifying the mining sector.
In a statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Segun Tomori, it was revealed that the Mining Marshals, deployed from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, apprehended 10 suspects along the Itobe-Ajokuta Road in Kogi State. The suspects were found to be in possession of minerals without the necessary letter of identification, thereby contravening the Minerals and Mining Act 2007 and Mining Regulations, 2011.
Subsequent investigations showed that the suspects had acquired the minerals from illegal miners in Kogi State without any proof of legal mining titles, records, or payment of royalties. Moreover, it was found that certain companies had unlawfully engaged third-party agents to purchase minerals from the “Awulu” community in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State.
The suspects have been charged in court and are awaiting trial, while the directors of the implicated companies have been summoned for interrogation, with appropriate measures to be taken against them as stipulated by law.
The Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah John Onoja, has affirmed the commitment to continue the operation at full capacity to ensure full compliance with the existing laws and regulations governing the mining sector in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to support the efforts of the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals in sanitizing the Nigerian mining sector.
This development signifies a significant stride towards reinstating order in the nation’s mining sector and ensuring the lawful exploitation of mineral resources.
It is imperative to recognize that illegal mining poses a serious threat to the environment, as well as to the economic and social well-being of affected communities. Therefore, the crackdown on illegal mining is a crucial step in guaranteeing the sustainable and responsible exploitation of mineral resources in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Tribune is a reputable source for this news, highlighting the government’s determination to enforce the laws and regulations governing the mining sector. The impounding of the trucks and the charges brought against the suspects underscore the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting responsible mining practices.
It is essential for all stakeholders, including mining companies and local communities, to adhere to the legal framework governing the mining sector. By doing so, they can contribute to the sustainable development of the sector while also safeguarding the environment and the rights of the people involved.
