The efforts to combat illegal mining in Nigeria have been significantly strengthened by the recent actions of the newly inaugurated corps of mining marshals. This commendable initiative, spearheaded by the federal government, has resulted in the impounding of 10 trucks and the apprehension of several suspects, marking a substantial impact in the fight against illegal mining.

In March 2024, the federal government took a proactive stance by inaugurating the first batch of Mining Marshals corps, consisting of personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. These marshals have played a pivotal role in enforcing the law and cracking down on illegal mining activities, showcasing a commendable dedication to their mandate.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals issued a statement detailing the successful operation carried out by the Mining Marshals along the Itobe-Ajokuta Road in Kogi State, resulting in the arrest of 10 suspects. These individuals were found to be in possession of minerals without the necessary letter of identification, a clear violation of the Minerals and Mining Act 2007 and Mining Regulations, 2011.

Subsequent investigations uncovered that the suspects had obtained the minerals from illegal miners in Kogi State, without the required evidence of legal mining titles, records, or payment of royalties. Furthermore, certain companies were found to have illicitly engaged third-party agents to procure minerals from the “Awulu” community in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State.

As a consequence of their actions, the suspects have been charged and are awaiting arraignment, while the directors of the implicated companies have been summoned for questioning. It has been affirmed that appropriate legal measures will be pursued against them in accordance with the law.

This significant development represents a pivotal milestone in the ongoing efforts to restore integrity to Nigeria’s mining sector, ensuring that the exploitation of mineral resources strictly adheres to existing laws and regulations.

Commander Attah John Onoja of the Mining Marshals has expressed a steadfast commitment to continuing the operation at full capacity in order to ensure unwavering compliance with the laws and regulations governing the mining sector in Nigeria. He underscored the crucial importance of the support of all stakeholders in aligning with the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals to cleanse the Nigerian Mining Sector of illegal activities.

The crackdown on illegal mining forms part of the Minister of Solid Minerals’ 7-point agenda aimed at purifying and revitalising the mining sector, reflecting the government’s resolute dedication to upholding the rule of law and promoting ethical mining practices in Nigeria.

The dedicated efforts of the Mining Marshals in clamping down on illegal mining activities serve as a compelling example of the proactive measures being undertaken to combat illegal mining and promote responsible mining practices in the country, further demonstrating the government’s unwavering commitment to enforcing the law and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s mining sector.
