Nigeria Cracks Down on Illegal Mining Operations, Seizes 10 Trucks
The recent crackdown on illegal mining operations in Nigeria has resulted in the impounding of 10 trucks and the charging of suspects for illegal possession and movement of mineral resources. This decisive action aligns with the Minister of Solid Minerals’ 7-point agenda to reform the mining sector.
The Mining Marshals, deployed from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, carried out the arrests along the Itobe-Ajokuta Road in Kogi State, Northcentral Nigeria. ACC Attah Onoja, the Commander of the Mining Marshals, declared that the suspects were found to be in possession of minerals without the required letter of identification, contravening the Minerals and Mining Act 2007 and Mining Regulations, 2011.
Subsequent investigations uncovered that the suspects had purchased the minerals from illegal miners in Kogi State without evidence of legal mining titles, records, or payment of royalties. Additionally, certain companies were found to have irregulary engaged third-party agents to obtain minerals from the “Awulu” community in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State. ACC Onoja also announced that the Directors of the implicated companies have been summoned for questioning, and appropriate legal action will be taken against them.
The Commander of the Mining Marshals has committed to maintaining the full-scale operation to ensure compliance with the laws and regulations governing the mining sector in Nigeria. He has urged stakeholders to extend their support to the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals in his endeavors to reform the Nigerian Mining Sector.
The crackdown on illegal mining operations is an essential step towards promoting ethical and legal mining practices in Nigeria. By taking decisive action against those involved in illegal mining activities, the government is sending a clear message that such practices will not be tolerated. Ultimately, this will lead to a more sustainable and responsible mining industry in the country.
It is crucial for all stakeholders, including mining companies, local communities, and government agencies, to collaborate in ensuring that mining activities are conducted in accordance with the law. This will help to safeguard the environment, promote safety and fair labor practices, and contribute to the overall development of the mining sector in Nigeria. The government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law in the mining industry is a positive indication for the future of mining in the country.
In conclusion, the crackdown on illegal mining operations and the seizure of 10 trucks in Nigeria demonstrates the government’s resolute stance against unlawful mining activities. By enforcing the laws and regulations governing the mining sector, the government is working towards creating a more transparent, responsible, and sustainable mining industry in Nigeria.
