Nigerian State Leaders Advocate for Stronger Partnerships in Mining Sector
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has restated the importance of enhancing intergovernmental relationships in order to better coordinate activities within the mining sector across the country.
During a meeting, NGF chairman, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, conveyed the group’s urging for closer collaboration and coordination among the various levels of government involved in overseeing the mining industry. The forum was provided with an in-depth briefing by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Oladele Alake, who presented government policies and the potential for growth in the industry.
The NGF expressed its backing for the minister’s initiatives to establish a conducive business environment for investors, promote artisanal and small-scale mining cooperatives, combat illegal mining, and reduce risks in the sector. Additionally, the minister encouraged state governments to establish mining companies and apply for mining licenses, a move that was recognized and appreciated by the forum.
Despite their support for the proposed reforms, the NGF emphasized the importance of stronger intergovernmental cooperation in supervising the sector’s operations, including licensing, monitoring, and implementation of necessary safeguards.
In addition to discussions concerning the mining sector, the forum also addressed critical issues in the healthcare sector. The NGF remains committed to driving improvements in healthcare, particularly in terms of insurance and nutrition. There was a focus on expanding health insurance coverage, nutrition performance, and addressing leadership challenges in primary healthcare.
The NGF Senior Health Advisor, Ahmad Abdulwahab, provided updates on the roll-out of Phase II of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in 21 states, commencing from May 27.
