The Need for Stringent Regulations in Lithium Mining to Protect Local Communities
The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has issued a formal appeal to the federal government to ensure that lithium mining activities in Nigeria are conducted with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and the protection of local livelihoods.
This call to action follows the inauguration of a lithium processing plant in Lafia, Nasarawa state, operated by Avatar, a Chinese firm capable of producing about 4,000 metric tonnes of lithium daily. Additionally, Canmax Technologies, another Chinese company, has indicated its intention to invest over $200 million in constructing a similar plant in Nasarawa.
CAPPA has underscored the potential of lithium mining to stimulate Nigeria’s economic growth and position the country as a global leader in the production of cleaner technologies. However, the organization has raised concerns regarding the inadequate oversight of mining operations in various regions of Nigeria.
Akinbode Oluwafemi, executive director of CAPPA, has emphasized the environmental challenges associated with lithium extraction, highlighting the tendency of mining companies to exploit local water sources for processing and engage in the indiscriminate disposal of waste in open waters and lands used by local communities. Oluwafemi has also expressed apprehension about the violent displacement of communities to facilitate mining operations, citing the adverse ecological impact and the absence of robust environmental regulations and corporate accountability.
CAPPA has pointed out the historical neglect of local communities by Nigeria’s mining sector, lamenting the exclusion of community voices in decision-making processes. The organization has stressed the necessity of involving local communities in governance structures and decision-making processes, as well as prioritizing their well-being through stringent regulations, fair compensation for land use, and opportunities for local economic development.
In response to these concerns, CAPPA has called on the federal government to reevaluate the governance structure of the mining sector, enforce strict regulations that prioritize community well-being, and hold corporations accountable for their actions. The organization has also emphasized the importance of transparency and enforcement in the operations of mining companies, urging the government to distance itself from the risks of perpetuating state-sanctioned ecological oppression.
