In a recent effort to address illegal mining activities, the Federal Government has taken decisive action by impounding 10 trucks and initiating legal proceedings against suspects for the illegal possession and transportation of minerals. This action aligns with the Minister of Solid Minerals’ 7-point agenda to cleanse the mining sector and ensure adherence to mining laws and regulations.

According to Segun Tomori, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, the Mining Marshals, deployed from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, apprehended 10 suspects along the Itobe-Ajokuta road in Kogi State. These individuals were found to be in possession of minerals without the requisite letter of identification, a blatant violation of the Minerals and Mining Act 2007 and Mining Regulations, 2011.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspects had acquired the minerals from illegal miners in Kogi State without any proof of legal mining titles, documentation, or payment of royalties. Furthermore, it was discovered that certain companies had unlawfully enlisted third-party agents to procure minerals from the “Awulu” community in Ankpa LGA, Kogi State.

As a consequence of these egregious transgressions, the suspects have been formally charged and are pending arraignment. In addition, the directors of the implicated companies have been summoned for questioning, and appropriate legal measures will be taken against them.

The Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah John Onoja, has expressed steadfast dedication to sustaining the operation at full capacity in order to ensure full compliance with the prevailing laws and regulations governing the mining sector in Nigeria. He has underscored the necessity for all stakeholders to lend their support to the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals in the effort to cleanse the Nigerian mining sector.

This significant development represents a crucial stride towards reinstating order in the nation’s mining sector and ensuring the ethical exploitation of mineral resources in accordance with the law.

As the government continues to take resolute action against illegal mining, it is vital for all individuals and entities involved in the mining sector to adhere strictly to the laws and regulations that govern the industry. This not only guarantees the sustainable and lawful exploitation of mineral resources, but also contributes to the overall growth and development of the mining sector in Nigeria.

In conclusion, the crackdown on illegal mining and the subsequent impounding of 10 trucks, along with the legal proceedings against the suspects, underscores the government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and fostering responsible mining practices. It is imperative for all stakeholders to throw their weight behind these initiatives and work towards maintaining compliance with mining laws and regulations for the betterment of the Nigerian mining sector and the nation as a whole.
