Deadly Gunmen Attack Rocks Nigerian Mining Community
The peaceful atmosphere of the mining community of Wase in northcentral Nigeria was shattered when a group of gunmen on motorbikes launched a violent raid, resulting in the tragic deaths of approximately 40 individuals. The attackers not only opened fire on residents but also set fire to homes, leaving behind a scene of devastation and sorrow. The local government has confirmed the harrowing loss of lives in this senseless attack, which took place late on Monday in the Wase district of Plateau state.
According to Plateau state commissioner for information Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, the armed assailants infiltrated the Zurak community, where they unleashed a barrage of indiscriminate gunfire and set ablaze numerous houses, including those of innocent civilians. The Zurak community, renowned for its mining activities, has now become the site of this tragic and horrifying incident.
The devastation of this raid was further emphasised by local youth leader Shafi’i Sambo, who reported that the death toll has risen to at least 42 people. The district of Wase is known for its rich deposits of zinc and lead, which are vital to the local economy. However, the violence and bloodshed that has pervaded the area is a stark reminder of the volatility that often surrounds resource-rich regions.
Plateau state, home to a thriving tin mining industry, has been a frequent hotspot for conflicts and clashes, given its strategic location between Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim north and largely Christian south. These disputes have often arisen from tensions between nomadic herders and pastoral farmers, exacerbated by the impacts of climate change on grazing land, water access, and other essential resources.
In addition to these underlying tensions, northwest and northcentral Nigeria have also been plagued by the presence of heavily armed criminal gangs, who have carried out a series of violent raids on villages, engaging in looting and mass kidnappings for ransom. These acts of terror have instilled fear and insecurity, leaving local communities vulnerable to further attacks.
Tragically, this incident adds to a history of intercommunal clashes in Plateau state, the most recent of which occurred in January in Mangu town.
