The indefinite suspension of all mining activities within the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and its teaching hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State has been declared by the Federal Government, as announced by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake. This decision is a response to reports of suspected illegal mining activities in the vicinity of the university.
Mr. Alake disclosed that the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development took action following reports of illegal mining or suspicious activities by mining operators within the university precincts. As a result, officials from the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and Mines Inspectorate were deployed to conduct an on-the-spot assessment, which confirmed the presence of mining activities in the area. Consequently, all mining activities, both legal and illegal, have been suspended for further investigations.
Following this development, the Minister held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Adebayo Bamire, and the Chief Medical Director of OAUTHC, John Okeniyi, and announced the indefinite suspension of all mining operations within the university premises and its environs until thorough investigations are concluded.
Throughout the meeting, Mr. Bamire expressed the university’s appreciation for the opportunity to engage with the Minister and highlighted the institution’s potential to contribute to the mining sector through research and exploration. He also mentioned the university’s application for an exploration license, expressing optimism for its approval to carry out exploration activities within the university environs and across the country.
The decision to suspend mining activities in the area underscores the government’s commitment to upholding regulations and preserving the integrity of mining operations. It also emphasizes the importance of responsible mining practices, particularly in areas with educational and healthcare institutions.
The meeting with the Minister and university authorities demonstrates a significant collaboration between the government and academic institutions in promoting sustainable resource management and research. It showcases the potential for universities to actively engage in the mining value chain by fostering exploration, research, and training facilities for mineral resources.
As discussions continue, it is essential for all stakeholders to prioritize the protection of the environment, the welfare of local communities, and the ethical conduct of mining operations. The temporary suspension of mining activities within the OAU precincts reflects a proactive approach to addressing potential issues and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards in the mining sector.
In conclusion, the dialogue between the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the leadership of Obafemi Awolowo University marks a significant step towards enhancing the collaboration between government agencies and academic institutions in the management of natural resources. The decision to suspend mining activities within the university premises and environs underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and sustainable practices in the mining sector.
