Illegal Mining in Niger State Leads to 30 Arrests for Violations

In Minna, officials from the Ministry of Mineral Resources carried out a recent operation to dismantle numerous illegal mining operations in the Maitumbi area. The result of this operation was the apprehension of 30 individuals, comprising 12 men, 18 women, and several minors, in addition to the confiscation of various pieces of equipment used for illegal mining.

Alhaji Adamu Garba, the Director of Mining in the Ministry, stated that the crackdown on illegal mining was prompted by the persistent refusal of the miners to vacate the site. This underscores the Ministry’s dedication to addressing the issue of illegal mining throughout the state, given its significant environmental threats and hazards faced by those involved. There is also a serious concern regarding the exploitation of underage labor in these activities.

Garba emphasized that the recent arrests send a clear message to those unlawfully exploiting Nigeria’s natural resources, particularly through the use of underage labor. The Ministry of Mineral Resources has prioritized cracking down on illegal mining operations, specifically focusing on safeguarding the welfare of citizens in Niger State, especially children engaged in such unlawful activities.

The aim is for the recent operation to serve as a deterrent for others engaging in similar activities and to encourage the mining industry to adhere to proper regulations and procedures. The Ministry intends to sustain its efforts in promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices across the entire country, ultimately preserving Niger State’s valuable resources for future generations.

Following the arrests, the individuals were initially taken to the state office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. Subsequently, they were transferred to the GRA Police station, where they will face charges in court. Enforcing legal action against those involved in illegal mining is a crucial step in ensuring that the laws and regulations governing mining activities are upheld.
