Emergency personnel in Nigeria are presently engaged in the efforts to extricate around 30 miners who became trapped following the collapse of an artisanal mining pit due to heavy rainfall. The occurrence took place in the village of Galkogo in the Shiroro district, where miners employed by a local company were working late into the night on Sunday.
Abdullahi Baba Ara, the head of Niger state’s relief agency, furnished specific information regarding the situation, asserting that more than 30 miners were presumed to be trapped in the collapsed pit. “Seven individuals have been evacuated with severe injuries whilst rescue work is ongoing to save the remainder,” Ara conveyed. However, due to the presence of armed criminal groups in the vicinity, rescue officials have faced notable obstacles in accessing the accident site.
The existence of heavily armed criminal gangs, identified as bandits, has impeded the smooth progression of rescue operations. Furthermore, the shortage of adequate equipment and the rugged terrain have compounded the challenges encountered by the rescue teams. “We had intended to deploy to the area, but were advised against doing so by security personnel owing to the insecure nature of the area as a result of the presence of bandits,” Ara explicated.
The Shiroro district, where the incident occurred, is renowned for its mining activities, particularly the extraction of minerals such as gold, tantalite, and lithium. However, the region has also been besieged by security difficulties, with bandits frequently launching attacks on remote villages, resulting in destruction and the abduction of residents for ransom. Last year, the government of Niger state banned mining activities in numerous districts, including Shiroro, Munya, and Rafi, due to concerns over insecurity and safety.
Despite the prohibition, artisanal miners persisted in operating in the area, compelled by the necessity to generate income for essential needs following displacement caused by bandit attacks. This determination to survive led them to disregard the mining ban, subjecting themselves to significant hazards.
The ongoing rescue efforts to liberate the trapped miners underscore the pressing necessity for enhanced safety measures in artisanal mining operations. Despite the challenging circumstances and security threats complicating the rescue mission, the dedication demonstrated by the emergency personnel involved remains steadfast.
