The Federal Government’s Plan to Enhance Surveillance of Mining Sites in Nigeria

Dr Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, recently conveyed the Federal Government’s intention to utilize technology for monitoring mining sites across Nigeria. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dr Alake underscored the government’s dedication to combating illegal mining by deploying 2,220 personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as part of the Mining Marshal Corps. These personnel have undergone training on modern warfare by the military to safeguard the country’s natural resources.

Dr Alake emphasized the government’s strategy to integrate technology, such as satellite surveillance devices, in conjunction with manpower to supervise mining sites in real-time. The implementation of this technology is aimed at expediting responses to identified infractions, thus reducing the lag associated with traditional communication methods. Furthermore, the use of satellite surveillance devices represents a significant leap towards more effective monitoring and intervention measures.

In an endeavour to attract larger investors to the sector, the Minister emphasized the significance of instilling confidence in their investments through the implementation of policies and initiatives to ensure a secure operating environment. Additionally, he acknowledged the security challenges inherited by the current administration, particularly the prevalence of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism in the solid mineral sector. Dr Alake reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to revitalizing the sector and enhancing its contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Dr Alake also highlighted the collaborative efforts between various government agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), the Nigerian Army, and the Police, to address the challenges posed by illegal mining. He also mentioned discussions with the Inspector General of Police to secure additional support, underscoring the comprehensive approach taken to combat illegal mining within the country.

In conclusion, the Federal Government’s initiative to integrate technology for the surveillance of mining sites in Nigeria demonstrates a proactive approach in addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining. By leveraging both manpower and technology, the government aims to enhance security within the sector and attract larger investments, thereby laying the groundwork for sustainable growth and development.
