Nigeria Bolsters Efforts to Combat Illegal Mining with Additional Deployment of 350 Marshals

Nigeria has increased its efforts to address illegal mining operations by deploying an additional 350 Mining Marshals across the country. This move, as stated by Dr. Dele Alake, the minister of solid minerals development, underscores the government’s commitment to reforming the mining sector.

Following the inauguration of the initial 2,220 mining marshals in March, more than 200 individuals involved in illegal mining have been apprehended, with 133 facing ongoing prosecutions. Additionally, minerals obtained through illegal means have been seized and forfeited to the federal government.

The intake of the new marshals brings the total number of specially trained and equipped operatives to 2,570, demonstrating the government’s resolve to address illegal mining activities nationwide.

In an interview, Dr. Alake expressed his intent to increase the number of operatives in each state from 60 to 100, illustrating a concerted effort to enhance the enforcement of mining regulations.

The passing-out parade of the new marshals at the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja was an occasion for the minister to acknowledge the collaborative efforts of Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in combating illegal mining.

According to a statement by Segun Tomori, special assistant on media to the minister of solid minerals development, Dr. Alake underscored the significant impact of the mining marshals in reducing illegal mineral haulage and unlicensed mining activities nationwide. He conveyed his confidence that the addition of the second batch of marshals will enhance their operational efficiency and expand their coverage.

Dr. Abubakar Audi, the NSCDC Commandant-General, revealed that the new marshals underwent an intensive eight-week training programme to prepare them for their vital role in curbing illegal mining, reflecting a proactive approach to addressing the issue at hand.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, stressed the importance of ongoing training and deployment of mining operatives to safeguard the nation’s mining areas and ensure the optimal utilization of solid minerals for economic development.

The recent deployment of mining marshals in Nigeria signifies a significant step towards addressing illegal mining activities and upholding the integrity of the mining sector. As the government intensifies its efforts to combat this issue, it is crucial to support these initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable and lawful mining practices for the benefit of the nation.
