The announcement made by Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, regarding the deployment of 350 additional operatives to the mining marshals is a clear indication of the government’s unwavering commitment to reforming the mining sector. This significant declaration took place at the Passing Out Parade for the new operatives at the NSCDC headquarters. The minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Mary Ogbe, commended Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their collaborative efforts in combatting illegal mining.
Minister Alake also highlighted the accomplishments of the mining marshals, acknowledging their role in significantly reducing illegal mineral haulage and the activities of unlicensed operators across the nation. Since the introduction of the first batch of 2,220 mining marshals, over 200 suspects engaged in illegal mining have been apprehended, with 133 cases currently undergoing prosecution. Furthermore, unlawfully mined minerals have been confiscated and forfeited to the government.
The deployment of the second batch of operatives is anticipated to strengthen the ranks and enhance the effectiveness of the squad, providing broader coverage to address illegal mining activities. The objective is to foster synergy between mining marshals and Federal Mines Officers (FMO) nationwide, with a focus on improving the sector and inspiring confidence in investors to attract more investments and advancement in the mining industry.
Dr. Abubakar Audi, the NSCDC Commandant-General, revealed that the new operatives have undergone rigorous 8-week training to prepare them for their responsibilities. Their training is intended to reinforce the operations of the mining marshals and intensify efforts against illegal miners on a national scale.
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, emphasised the successful collaboration between the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Ministry of Interior, highlighting the necessity for continuous training and deployment to ensure comprehensive coverage of the country’s extensive mining areas. The induction of the new operatives now brings the total number of specially trained and equipped mining marshals deployed nationwide to 2,570.
This strategic initiative by the Federal Government, through the additional deployment of 350 operatives to the mining marshals, demonstrates a staunch dedication to combating illegal mining and fostering positive transformation within the mining sector. This concerted effort between ministries and the NSCDC epitomises unified action towards efficiently managing and utilising the nation’s solid mineral resources for sustainable economic growth and development.
