Nigerian Mining Geosciences Society Urges Federal Government to Halt Illegal Mining Activities

The Nigerian Mining Geosciences Society (NMGS) has conveyed serious concern regarding the detrimental effects of illegal mining on the economy of the country, highlighting significant revenue losses. During the 255th Council Meeting of the society in Uyo, the president, Prof. Akinade Olatunji, emphasized the urgent necessity for adequate funding of mine offices across Nigeria in order to effectively monitor and curb illegal mining activities.

In addressing the press, Prof. Olatunji underscored the crucial role of government support in equipping and staffing mine offices to combat the ongoing problem of illegal mining. He cited instances where illegal mining has resulted in severe environmental degradation and a decline in the nation’s economic growth, calling for immediate action to mitigate its impact.

Prof. Olatunji also urged the government to provide logistical support, particularly vehicles, to facilitate monitoring activities in remote mining locations. He emphasized the importance of having qualified and motivated personnel on the ground to effectively address these challenges.

The president of NMGS further highlighted the inadequate staffing of the mining inspectorate units as a significant obstacle in curbing illegal mining. Drawing parallels with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), he proposed a separate salary scale for staff in these units to ensure effective regulation and enforcement of mining laws.

Moreover, Prof. Olatunji emphasized the society’s firm stance against illegal mining, citing its detrimental effects on national revenue, employment opportunities, and environmental preservation. He warned that if left unchecked, illegal mining would result in vast wastelands unsuitable for any productive use, making it imperative for the government to take decisive action.

Dismissing claims linking borehole drilling to earthquakes, Prof. Olatunji clarified that there is no scientific basis for such assertions. However, he cautioned against indiscriminate drilling of boreholes due to its potential adverse environmental impact.

The NMGS’s call to address illegal mining aligns with the broader objective of promoting sustainable mining practices and upholding environmental conservation. The society’s advocacy for stronger government intervention and investment in the mining sector reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources and economic prosperity.
