Nigeria Establishes Committee for Creation of Mining Centre of Excellence

The Federal Government of Nigeria has recently made a significant stride in the development of the solid minerals sector with the launch of the Committee for the Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence (CoE). This initiative is aimed at providing a comprehensive platform to address the diverse needs of investors operating within the solid minerals sector.

Dr. Mrs. Mary Ogbe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development/Steel Development, emphasized the crucial role of the CoE in repositioning and maximizing the contribution of the mining sector to the nation’s economy during the inauguration ceremony in Abuja. The primary objective of the CoE is to foster collaboration among key departments of the Ministry, facilitating efficient use of the Decision Support System (DSS) and promoting knowledge-sharing, best practices, and capacity building within the mining sector.

The establishment of the CoE is expected to not only cater to the needs of investors in the solid mineral sector but also serve as a focal point for international partnerships and collaboration in mining investment. This is in line with the government’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a prime destination for mining activities and opportunities.

Dr. Ogbe expressed confidence in the capacity of the CoE to fulfill its mandate and serve as a catalyst for advancing the objectives of the Ministry, and conveyed the assurance of support from the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, who has pledged to provide the necessary resources for the CoE to effectively execute its functions.

The Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence is envisaged to facilitate collaboration among various departments and agencies of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, including the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Mining Cadastre Office (MCO), Mines Inspectorate, and the offices of the Permanent Secretary and the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development.

The Committee responsible for overseeing the establishment of the CoE comprises nominated members from the different departments and agencies of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development. The committee will be chaired by the Director of Investment Promotion and Minerals Trade Department of the Ministry, reflecting the high level of expertise and experience that will guide the operations of the CoE.

In conclusion, the inauguration of the Committee for the Nigerian Mining Centre of Excellence marks an important milestone in the efforts to strengthen and expand the solid minerals sector in Nigeria. The establishment of the CoE reflects the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investment and growth in the mining industry, ultimately contributing to the overall development of the nation’s economy.
