Securing Nigeria’s Mining Sector: Inauguration of 2,220 Mining Marshals to Protect Minerals

The Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has expressed deep concern regarding the increasing insecurity within the nation’s mining sector. In an effort to tackle this issue, he recently oversaw the inauguration of 2,220 mining marshals from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to safeguard solid minerals across the country. These marshals have been entrusted with the responsibility of eradicating illegal miners and ensuring the protection of the nation’s mineral resources.

During the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, Dr. Alake emphasized the paramount importance of addressing insecurity in the mining sector, citing its detrimental impact on the nation’s revenue generation. He underscored the necessity of a secure operating environment in order to maximize the contribution of the mineral sector to Nigeria’s gross domestic product. Dr. Alake also highlighted the tireless efforts of the presidential Inter-ministerial committee on securing natural resources, which he chairs, in conceptualising and executing policies to enhance security in the mining environment.

The role of the Minister of Interior, the Honourable Olubunmi-Ojo, in the establishment of the new security outfit was lauded by Dr. Alake. He commended Honourable Olubunmi-Ojo for his unwavering commitment to this initiative and the collaboration with the Ministry of Solid Minerals to accomplish the feat of enhancing security in the mining sector.

In response, the Commandant-General of NSCDC, Abubakar Audi, expressed unwavering confidence in the ability of the new mines marshals to effectively protect national assets and infrastructure, including solid minerals. He assured that the marshals will work closely with mine inspectorates in states to gather intelligence and execute their mandate effectively.

Furthermore, the Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, the Honourable Jonathan Gbefwi, commended the initiative and stressed the importance of enhanced security around mining areas for the economic growth of Nigeria. He expressed his support and cooperation on behalf of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.

The deployment of 2,220 mining marshals represents a significant stride towards safeguarding the minerals sector in Nigeria. This move is expected to combat the ongoing insecurity in the mining environment and contribute to the overall economic development of the country.

It is commendable to witness the government taking tangible steps to address the challenges in the mining sector, as this will ultimately lead to a more secure and productive environment for the extraction of solid minerals. The successful implementation of this initiative will not only enhance revenue generation but also create a conducive atmosphere for sustainable growth and development in Nigeria’s mining industry.
