Strategies to Combat Illegal Mining in Nigeria, According to President of NMGS

The President of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Akinade Olatunji, has outlined a series of measures to address the prevalent issue of illegal mining in Nigeria in a formal and professional manner. Emphasizing the importance of adequately funding federal mining offices in all states to effectively monitor and regulate the sector, Olatunji highlighted the significant financial losses incurred annually due to unauthorized extraction of various minerals, including sand mining in rivers and streams.

Speaking at the 255th council meeting of the society in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, Olatunji underscored the widespread nature of illegal mining activities, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced monitoring and surveillance in rural areas where these activities predominantly occur. He further advocated for an increase in staff capacity within state mining offices, along with the implementation of a special salary scale for mining officers and engineers to bolster motivation, and the provision of vehicles to facilitate operational efficiency.

Olatunji condemned illegal mining activities, citing the detrimental impact on the environment. He emphasized the integral role of the mining sector in contributing to Nigeria’s economy, underscoring the necessity for sustainable development to foster job creation and economic growth.

The president of NMGS also addressed concerns about the potential correlation between the drilling of boreholes and seismic threats, dispelling any links between the two issues. Commending the Akwa Ibom government for its professional expertise in infrastructure development and its robust network of roads and rich mineral resources, Olatunji praised the state for its utilization of clay and silicon.

He reiterated the council’s commitment to raising awareness and engaging member states in the comprehensive harnessing and development of Nigeria’s abundant mineral resources.

As the president of NMGS, Olatunji’s insights and recommendations shed light on the multifaceted challenges posed by illegal mining in Nigeria and underscore the imperative for strategic interventions to curb these detrimental activities. His perspectives also underline the vital role of effective governance and regulatory frameworks in advancing sustainable mining practices and safeguarding the environment.
