‘Chinese Nationals and Nigerian Suspect Remanded in Custody for Illegal Mining Activities’

In a recent turn of events regarding illegal mining in Umuchieze, Abia State, eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian citizen have been remanded in Kuje Prison, Abuja. The suspects were apprehended by the Mining Marshals, a division of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The accused individuals, including Shen Yongchan, Mo Baixian, Xiao Bin, Huang Xu Fa, Ma Bingli, Yang Jian, Li Peiyin, Que Wenyong, Hiyk Edward Desmond, and Wanda Company Limited, face charges related to illegal mining and obstructing authorized mining operations.

The trial of the suspects is currently underway before Justice J.K Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The prosecution has filed a 3-count charge against the accused, raising serious concerns about unauthorized mining and obstruction of legal mining activities.

Under the leadership of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, the Mining Marshals have been diligently working to eradicate criminal activities in mining areas nationwide. The initiative, known as “Operation Hayakin Kogo,” is a crucial component of the Minister’s 7-point agenda to bring positive changes to the mining sector.

The Minister has pledged to enhance the operations of the Mining Marshals by integrating advanced technology and providing additional equipment to ensure Nigeria can make the most of its mineral resources.
