The Nigerian government has taken a stringent approach to tackling illegal mining activities in the country through the arraignment of eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian for their involvement in illegal mining in the South-East geopolitical zone, particularly in Abia State.
Operation Hayakin Kogo, a specialized security unit under the leadership of Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, was responsible for apprehending the suspects in the Lokpaukwu community of Umunneochi Local Government Area. The primary objective of this unit is to address the issue of illegal mining and to promote compliance with mining regulations.
The case was presented before Justice J.K Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the prosecution filed a 3-count charge against the defendants, including charges related to mining without lawful authority and obstruction of lawful mining operations. The defendants, comprising eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian, were remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre until the next adjourned date.
The Mining Marshals, led by ACC John Onoja, played a pivotal role in apprehending the suspects. This specialized unit, consisting of 2,570 members, is devoted to eradicating criminal activities in mining areas across Nigeria.
Minister Dele Alake highlighted his dedication to enhancing the operations of the unit by providing them with advanced technology and equipment. His aim is to ensure that Nigeria can maximize the benefits from its extensive mineral resources.
