The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals, Jonathan Gbefwi, has expressed significant concern regarding Nigeria’s estimated loss of $9 billion annually due to illegal mining activities. This statement was issued during an investigative hearing conducted by the committee in Abuja.
Gbefwi highlighted the unregulated exploitation of natural resources as a major threat to the sustainability of the mineral sector, stressing its contribution to environmental degradation. He noted that the absence of regulation and oversight in this area is resulting in substantial revenue losses for the country.
The Chairman underscored the urgency of addressing this issue promptly and taking decisive action to ensure compliance with legal frameworks within the solid mineral sector. Emphasizing the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations and preventing further revenue loss, Gbefwi urged for immediate intervention.
The public hearing aimed to investigate various aspects of illegal mining activities, including the under-reporting of yields by mining and quarry license operators, in addition to the utilization of financial support in the Nigerian solid minerals sector amounting to trillions of naira. Deliberations also centred on the Nigeria Minerals and Mining Act (Amendment Bill) and Nigeria Solid Minerals Development Company (Establishment Bill).
Representing Karu/Keffi/Kokona Federal Constituency, Nasarawa State, Gbefwi stressed the imperative nature of comprehensive measures to address this pressing issue. The overarching objective is to effectively regulate Nigeria’s solid mineral sector, safeguarding natural resources while harnessing their potential for the nation’s benefit.
The revelations emerging from the committee’s investigation serve as a stark reminder of the challenges Nigeria confronts in managing its natural resources. The implications of illegal mining activities extend beyond mere financial loss, encompassing environmental degradation and social impacts that affect communities nationwide.
The commitment of the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals to addressing these issues is commendable. The findings from the investigative hearing underscore the urgent need for regulatory measures to curb illegal mining activities and ensure the sustainable and responsible exploitation of natural resources.
The concerted efforts of the government and relevant stakeholders will be pivotal in implementing effective measures to combat illegal mining and promote sustainable practices that will safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources, delivering long-term benefits for the nation and its people.
