In a recent public hearing, the committee on solid minerals development revealed that Nigeria is losing a staggering $9 billion annually due to illegal mining activities. The chairman of the committee, Jonathan Gbefwi, highlighted the significant risks posed by unregulated mining on the nation’s economy, environment, and security.
Gbefwi emphasized the urgent need to address this issue and ensure that the solid mineral sector operates within the framework of the law, with a focus on protecting natural resources for future generations. He expressed deep concern over the environmental degradation and revenue loss caused by illegal mining, which ultimately hampers the country’s ability to maximize the benefits from its mineral resources.
Furthermore, it was disclosed that approximately 80% of mining activities in the north-west region are conducted illegally. This growing socio-economic challenge has had devastating impacts on the ecosystems and has contributed to increased poverty levels, particularly among peasant farmers who rely on environmental resources for their livelihood.
Tajudeen Abbas, the speaker of the house, highlighted the unfortunate reality that criminal elements have been stealing the wealth derived from Nigeria’s rich solid mineral deposits. The illicit mining operations have not only led to environmental degradation, air, and water pollution, but have also been at the root of community violence in various mining areas.
The consequences of illegal mining have been dire, as evidenced by the destruction of farmlands, crops, and economic trees, thereby significantly reducing the benefits and values to the residents. This has resulted in agonizing conditions for mining communities, both economically and socially, due to years of neglect and severe deprivation.
It is evident that decisive action must be taken to address these nefarious mining practices and noncompliance with set standards in the solid minerals sector. By doing so, Nigeria can work towards safeguarding its natural resources, protecting the environment, and positively impacting the economy and livelihoods of its citizens.
