The Niger State Government has conditionally lifted the ban on mining activities across the state. Acting Governor Yakubu Garba announced this during the inauguration of an 18-member task force aimed at combating illegal mining and managing environmental impacts, held on August 26, 2024, at the Government House in Minna.
Key points from the announcement include:
– The government’s concern over rampant illegal mining, which has persisted despite efforts to regulate the sector.
– The recognition of mining’s importance for economic growth, yet acknowledging its adverse environmental effects that led to the previous ban.
– The task force is charged with enforcing responsible mining practices, monitoring illegal mining sites, reporting child labour, and assessing security challenges in mining areas.
– Currently, there are 880 registered mining companies in Niger State, but only 261 have complied with reporting requirements.
– The task force comprises a diverse group of officials, including the Commissioner for Mineral Resources and heads of various security agencies, with the Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Abubakar Usman, as Chairman.
Garba emphasised the task force’s role in safeguarding the environment and ensuring fairness in mining operations to secure a prosperous future for Niger State.
The task force aims to transform Niger State’s mineral resources into economic opportunities that benefit local communities.
Alh. Abubakar Usman expressed commitment to fulfilling the task force’s objectives effectively.
