NMGS Calls for Action Against Illegal Mining in Nigeria

The Nigerian Mining Geosciences Society (NMGS) has called on the federal government to take decisive action against illegal mining in Nigeria, which is reportedly resulting in significant loss of revenue.

Key points raised by NMGS President Prof. Akinade Olatunji during a recent press conference include:
– Impact of Illegal Mining: Olatunji highlighted that illegal mining is damaging the economy and causing environmental harm. He stressed that the situation cannot continue unchecked.
– Need for Funding: He urged the government to adequately fund and equip mining offices nationwide to improve monitoring and enforcement against illegal practices. Professionals within these offices need proper support and logistics.
– Staffing Issues: The president pointed out that many mining offices lack sufficient staff, weakening oversight. He advocates for increasing personnel numbers and ensuring they receive salaries comparable to those in the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to enhance their motivation and effectiveness.
– Environmental Concerns: While Olatunji dismissed claims linking borehole drilling to earthquakes, he cautioned that irresponsible drilling can have detrimental effects on the environment.

He concluded by emphasising that illegal mining not only robs the nation of revenue and job opportunities but will also lead to irreversible land degradation if not addressed urgently.
