NSCDC Takes Action Against Illegal Mining in Kaduna State

The NSCDC has shut down an illegal mining operation in Kaduna State, using a diplomatic approach to engage local communities. This move aims to restore security and economic stability in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, receiving support from local leaders and government officials. The fight against illegal mining remains a priority for the NSCDC.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken decisive action by shutting down an illegal mining site in the Damau community, located in the Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State. This move follows a directive from Commandant General Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi to combat insecurity, vandalism, and economic sabotage across Nigeria.

The illegal mining operation, targeting a tin-rich site owned by Trobell Minerals Limited, had faced encroachment from unauthorized miners for months. Officials highlighted that these activities had caused considerable economic damage, environmental harm, and rising insecurity in the region.

Responding to this challenge, NSCDC Mining Marshals employed a non-kinetic approach, engaging with local communities rather than using force. Traditional leaders and local youths were included in discussions, facilitating the miners’ departure from the site without resistance.

Afolabi Babawale, the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer, reported that local stakeholders welcomed this diplomatic strategy, offering their continued support to maintain the progress achieved. One local official remarked on the serious threats posed by illegal mining to lives and livelihoods.

During a one-year anniversary event for the NSCDC Mining Marshal, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to strengthening the Special Unit. He said, “You should keep up the good work as the reward for hard work is more work; you will be provided with necessary logistic resources and operational support.”

Attah John Onoja, the Mining Marshal Commander, acknowledged the importance of this fight and stated that tackling illegal mining is a top priority and remains non-negotiable for the NSCDC. The actions taken represent both a local and national effort to restore security and investor confidence in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.

The NSCDC’s recent crackdown on illegal mining in Kaduna State highlights a concerted effort to address economic sabotage, restore order, and protect local communities. The use of diplomatic engagement has gained support from local leaders, and government commitment reinforces the importance of these initiatives in tackling illegal mining activities.
