Oyo State Government Launches Assault on Illegal Mining Operations

Oyo State launches a Joint Task Force to combat illegal mining under Executive Order 001/2023. The initiative involves various stakeholders including the government, traditional rulers, and security agencies. Key officials emphasise the need for compliance with mining regulations and community involvement. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to help curb illegal practices.

In an effort to tackle illegal mining, the Oyo State Government has formed a Joint Task Force following Executive Order 001/2023. This move marks a strong approach against unauthorised mining practices and aims to reinforce adherence to mining regulations. Officials, traditional leaders, community representatives, and security agencies gathered in Babaaro, Igbeti, and Iseyin City Hall to pledge their commitment to responsible resource management and environmental protection.

Mr. Abiodun Oni, the Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), stated that the state will no longer tolerate illegal mining. He emphasised, “The Joint Task Force has come to stay in Oyo State. Anyone found engaging in illegal mining will be held accountable and prosecuted. The law will take its full course.” Additionally, he commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his leadership in securing the state and its resources.

Oni also urged local residents to report illegal activities, reminding them, “If you see something, say something. We must all join hands to curb this menace.” In a show of commitment, the government has also provided amenities like a borehole for the local community.

Mrs. Olufunke Omidiran, the General Manager of OYSMIDA, labelled the new initiative a strategic reaction to the increasing threat of illegal mining. She assured the public that the Task Force is equipped to promote sustainable mining practices and protect the environment.

Addressing the event, ACG Segun Adegoke, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Migrant and Homeland Security, linked illegal mining to organised crime, including kidnapping and banditry. He noted that the Task Force involves various recognised security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps, underlining the seriousness of the initiative.

Moreover, the enforcement of Executive Order 001/2023 has begun, particularly emphasising that mining stakeholders must agree to Community Development Agreements (CDAs) as mandated by the Nigerian Mining Act. In a meeting in Iseyin, Oni reinforced the importance of defining responsibilities within mining communities, stressing that traditional leaders play a critical role in this process.

He pointed out, “Progress has been slow due to limited cooperation from some stakeholders, particularly traditional leaders. This enforcement meeting is to re-emphasise everyone’s roles and ensure no one claims ignorance of the process.”

In a show of unity, traditional rulers and local government officials have designated His Royal Majesty, Oba Jimoh Olajide Titiloye, alongside Hon. Kazeem Olayanju, as key figures for grassroots implementation. Oba Titiloye pledged support for the government’s efforts, while Olayanju highlighted the necessity for communities to benefit from mining.

“Although mining is on the Federal exclusive list, our communities must still benefit. Miners must register with the State and enter into CDAs before obtaining community consent,” he stressed. Representatives from Operation Burst, NSCDC, the Old Oyo National Park, and the Zonal Mining Officer have urged the newly formed Task Force to prioritise intelligence gathering and to remain proactive in their enforcement actions.

The Oyo State Government’s crackdown on illegal mining is a significant step towards protecting the region’s resources and communities. With the formation of the Joint Task Force and enforcement of Executive Order 001/2023, officials are aiming to curb unauthorised mining and ensure compliance with mining regulations. The collaboration between state agencies, traditional leaders, and local communities underscores a collective responsibility towards sustainable resource management.
