NSCDC Seizes 9 Truckloads of Mining Materials in Benue

The Benue Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made a significant interception, seizing nine trucks loaded with limonite and lithium. The state commandant, Yakubu Ibrahim, shared this information during a press briefing in Makurdi.

According to Ibrahim, one of the trucks, identified by the registration number Ogun JGB 344 XB and white in colour, was found loaded with limonite at Jato-Aka in Kwande local government area of Benue on October 10. He highlighted that limonite is a crucial ore of titanium with various uses in industries such as paints, inks, fabrics, plastics, papers, sunscreen, food, and cosmetics.

In a separate incident on November 19, eight trucks with Lagos registration numbers were intercepted at Apa Oweto road in Otukpo local government area of Benue. However, no suspects have been apprehended in connection with the crime. The drivers and passengers in the trucks fled upon sighting the NSCDC officials, but investigations are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The commandant emphasised the state’s strong stance against illegal mining and economic sabotage, assuring that there will be no refuge for those involved in such activities. Additionally, the command presented seven suspects involved in various crimes to the media. One of the suspects, Jacob Apav, was apprehended on November 9 in Kwande local government area and faces charges related to criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, cattle rustling, theft, possession of stolen items, and cheating. The other suspects were identified as Peter Kpandev, Godwin Sarwuan, Monday Nwoba, Jude Ugoh, Kenneth Njoku, and Francis Nnabu.

As the investigations continue, it is clear that the NSCDC is committed to upholding the law and protecting the economic interests of the state. This interception serves as a stern warning to those involved in illegal mining and other criminal activities. The collaboration between the NSCDC and the state government in addressing these issues is a vital step towards maintaining law and order in the region.
