Conflict Erupts Over Lucrative Mining Site in Nasarawa
A brewing conflict has arisen among mining companies in Nasarawa State regarding the ownership of a lucrative mining site. At the heart of the discord are the ample lithium deposits in the state, a crucial element for rechargeable batteries in cell phones, electric vehicles, and grid storage. The disputed area is claimed by Zurfi Mining, Harrick Global Investment Nigeria Limited, and Feiya Mining Company. The conflict originated in the Endo community, Udege, Nasarawa local government area, with conflicting assertions of ‘Mining Consent’ reportedly issued by community leaders.
The State House of Assembly’s committee on environment, headed by Mr Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, stepped in following the submission of a petition. The committee visited the site and community to conduct an investigation. Mr Omadefu expressed apprehension regarding the indiscriminate issuance of mining approvals by community leaders and underscored the significance of adhering to proper protocols. In a recent statement, he emphasized that Feiya Mining Company is the sole authorised entity according to the Endo community, refuting the claims of Zurfi Mining Company and Harrick Global Investment Nigeria Limited.
This conflict has raised significant concerns, spotlighting the necessity for transparent and regulated procedures in the mining sector.
