Revolutionizing Nigeria’s Mining Sector: The Impact of the Online Mining Cadastre System
The Nigerian Mining Cadastre Office (NMCO) has experienced a significant increase in the number of applications for mineral titles since the introduction of its new online platform, the Electronic Mining Cadastre System (eMC+), in November 2022. According to Engr Simon O. Nkom, the director-general of the NMCO, the implementation of the eMC+ has resulted in a noteworthy 40 percent rise in the online submission of applications for mineral titles. This shift to the online platform has played a pivotal role in attracting more investors to the mining sector, aligning with the organization’s objectives.
During a one-day retreat held by the NMCO in Abuja, Engr Nkom emphasized the importance of equipping staff with the necessary skills to effectively manage the operations of the new technology. He stressed the significance of reorienting the workforce to adapt to the digital system, which will ultimately elevate the management and administration of mineral titles to a higher standard. The retreat, held under the theme “Repositioning MCO Through Attitude Transformation for Improved Productivity,” aimed to prepare the staff for the future and enhance their proficiency in handling the eMC+.
In the context of combating illegal mining activities, Engr Nkom highlighted the potential of the eMC+ to streamline the administration of mineral titles, thereby discouraging illicit mining operations. The transparency and efficiency offered by the new system have the capacity to serve as a deterrent against illegal mining, contributing to the overall integrity of the mining sector.
Furthermore, the retreat featured insightful presentations from distinguished individuals. Ahmad Saad Abubakar, representing the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), addressed the pervasive issue of corruption in service delivery. He underscored the necessity of leveraging the new technology to promote a corruption-free environment within the NMCO, emphasizing the role of the organization’s leadership in upholding ethical conduct and transparent service delivery.
Similarly, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, delivered a compelling presentation on instilling good work ethics and integrity. His words resonated with the staff, urging them to uphold the ethical standards of public service as a means of fostering national development. These discussions further underlined the commitment of the NMCO to operate with utmost integrity and efficiency, underpinned by the capabilities of the eMC+.
In conclusion, the implementation of the Electronic Mining Cadastre System has signalled a transformative shift in the Nigerian mining sector. The enthusiastic response from investors, coupled with the concerted efforts to address ethical and operational challenges, reflects the NMCO’s dedication to modernizing the industry. By harnessing the potential of cutting-edge technology and reinforcing ethical standards, the NMCO is poised to play a pivotal role in driving sustainable growth and development within the mining sector.
