Nigeria’s Efforts Toward Mining Sector Revitalization: A Boost for the Economy
The Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) has affirmed its unwavering commitment to revitalizing the mining sector to stimulate economic growth and promote overall development across the country. In an interview in Abuja, the Director-General of the MCO, Obadiah Nkom, emphasized the agency’s determination to elevate the mining sector to global standards, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the country’s economy.
According to Mr Nkom, the ongoing plan for the agency aims to reposition the mining cadastre to a world-class standard. He underscored the significance of aligning with the mining cadastre and the new administration’s agenda as essential steps towards developing the mineral sector. Mr Nkom also highlighted the long-term roadmap of the mining cadastre, which has remained consistent across different government administrations.
The MCO launched an electronic mining cadastre system (eMC+) on November 1, 2022, in an effort to improve service delivery, ensure transparency, and enhance accessibility of information. Mr Nkom stressed the mandatory compliance aspect of the sector, urging the public to familiarize themselves with the system, which currently operates at 40% online capacity. He also reiterated the need for public enlightenment programs around the country with the help of the agency’s zonal offices.
Furthermore, Mr Nkom encouraged Nigerian investment in the sector, emphasizing the economic potential of mining as a key driver of economic growth and national development. He pointed out that the ease of doing business with the mining cadastre provides a unique advantage for the exploitation of the country’s abundant mineral resources.
In light of these developments, it is essential for the public to understand the progress being made in repositioning the mining sector. The commitment of the MCO to elevate the mining cadastre to international standards is a critical step towards enhancing Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
