Oyo State Government Takes Decisive Action Against Unauthorized Mining Activities
The Oyo State Mineral Development Agency has recently announced the closure of several mining sites that were operating without the requisite consent letters and community development agreements in the state. This decision was made to bring order to the mining sector and prevent illegal activities that may pose a potential threat to the state.
In a public address in Ibadan, the state capital, Mr Abiodun Oni, the Director General of the agency, elucidated the rationale behind this move. He underscored the state government’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure adherence to mining laws and regulations. Prior to the closure of the mining sites, the agency had requested the necessary legal documents to authorize their operations, as mandated in the Mining Act and related laws.
Mr Oni emphasized that the state would not tolerate any form of illegality in the mining sector. He also highlighted the signing of an Executive Order by Governor Seyi Makinde, granting the agency the authority to close any mining industry operating outside the boundaries of the law.
Furthermore, Mrs Jolade Omidiran, the coordinating Director of the Agency, urged miners and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that their documents are in order to avoid enforcement action being taken against them.
