NEITI and NBS to Join Forces for Data Sharing and Integrity
The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) are poised to formalize their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at bolstering the exchange and management of data. The primary objective of this partnership is to enhance the integrity, analysis, and utilization of data for the advancement of national development.
During a recent meeting between NEITI’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, and the Statistician General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, plans were outlined to establish formal guidelines for data sharing and coordination. The focus will be on improving data integrity and ensuring its accuracy and reliability.
The MoU will encompass various areas of cooperation, including manpower training and development, enhancement of information technology systems, and the development of frameworks to enhance operational efficiency. Furthermore, it will encompass the commitment of the partnership to effectively manage information and data on Beneficial Ownership Disclosures, Contract Transparency, Gender, and Environment to provide citizens with crucial insights into contract awards and company ownership.
Dr. Orji emphasized the significance of collaborating with agencies such as the NBS to maintain consistency and standards in data dissemination at both national and sub-national levels. He recognized the need for NEITI to support NBS with data from the extractive industries whilst also expanding its scope to address socio-economic development issues related to oil, gas, and mining operations in Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary lauded the NEITI-NBS partnership, particularly in light of the international recognition of NEITI’s credible data in the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative report. He highlighted Nigeria’s highest score in data integrity, underscoring the meticulous efforts invested in generating the information and data contained in NEITI’s industry reports.
In response, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran underscored the significance of safeguarding the unique nature, integrity, and credibility of both NEITI and NBS. He reiterated their unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability, emphasizing the need to generate insightful data on the Solid Minerals sector, similar to the endeavors in the oil and gas sector.
The meeting concluded with a mutual determination to support and collaborate in promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive sector. Notably, senior management members from both NEITI and NBS were in attendance, underscoring the paramount importance of the partnership.
