Nigeria has recently made significant advancements in its mining sector with the introduction of the Online Mining Cadastre System by the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office (MCO). This new system, which is built on GAF’s eMC+ framework, aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility for global investors.

The digital cadastre system will connect the six zonal offices in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones with the headquarters in Abuja. This interconnectedness will ensure the seamless and transparent management of the mining sector in Nigeria. Additionally, investors will benefit from the ability to submit applications and monitor their progress through this system, while the general public will have real-time access to cadastral information.

Designed with GAF AG’s eMC+ (electronic Mining Cadastre+), the system will facilitate the administration and management of mineral titles by providing transparency and accessibility to information. GAF, a company based in Munich, Germany, is renowned for providing tailored consulting services and software to mining cadastre authorities worldwide.

During the launch event, Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President of Nigeria, expressed his approval of the new system, stating, “Nigeria now has a cadastre system that is efficient, non-discretionary, transparent, and accessible to investors worldwide.” He emphasized the strategic investments made in the development of digitized platforms and technology infrastructure to support the governance of the mining sector.

Engr Simon Nkom, the Director General of MCO, emphasized the advantages of the online platform, which will allow investors and prospects worldwide to access their information online and in real-time through laptops and phones. Furthermore, he highlighted that the upgraded cadastre system is expected to enhance revenue generation and encourage foreign investment in the sector.

Funded by a World Bank credit from the International Development Association (IDA), the upgraded cadastre system is part of the “Mineral Sector Support for Economic Diversification Project – MINDIVER.” The contract for the system’s development, signed by GAF in September 2018, encompasses the “Upgrading and Automatization of the Mining Cadastre Office for Online Applications, e-recording, Archiving and Establishment of Mining Cadastre Offices in the Six Geopolitical Zones.”

The launch of the Online Mining Cadastre System marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize and revitalize its mining sector. The new digital platform is poised to bring about transparency, efficiency, and attract foreign investment, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic growth and development.
