The Senate is gonna investigate why the money we’re making from solid minerals is going down. They’re telling the government to stop selling off mining assets until they figure out what’s going on. They also want the government to review all the past programs related to mining and minerals and make sure they’re actually benefiting the country. This all came about because Senator Osita Ngwu from Enugu West sponsored a motion to look into the mining industry and see why it’s not doing so well. He said that even though quarrying is the biggest part of the mining sector, the government isn’t getting much money from it. Other African countries are doing way better than us when it comes to mining. The Bureau of Public Enterprises has been selling off mining facilities, but it hasn’t really helped the industry. The government has spent a lot of money on mining, but it’s not creating jobs or improving the economy like it should. Some senators think that the people in charge of mining are just doing it for their own benefit and not for the country. They want the Senate to make mining a top priority and get the government to do more to support the industry. They also want to investigate illegal mining and see if anyone is involved in it. The Senate wants to review all the past programs related to mining and minerals and stop selling off mining assets until they figure out what’s going wrong. They’re giving the committee three weeks to come back with a report.
