The Benue State House of Assembly has taken disciplinary action against four of its members on the grounds of alleged disruption to the legislative process. The suspended members are Solomon Gyila (Gwer West Constituency), Douglas Akya (Makurdi South Constituency), Dyako Ashwa (Konshisha Constituency) and Anthony Agom (Okpokwu Constituency).

The decision to suspend the members for a period of three months was made following a motion by the Majority Leader of the House, Saater Tiseer, and seconded by Peter Ipusu of Katsina-Ala West State Constituencies.

The suspension of these members coincided with a meeting of the party elders at the Government House, during which a vote of confidence in the governor was passed, in spite of opposition from the state working committee and local government chapters. The APC elders, led by former Senate President, Ameh Ebute, are calling for an emergency stakeholders’ meeting to address internal issues within the party.

Addressing the press, Ameh Ebute, a former Nigerian Senate President, expressed his commitment to revitalizing democracy in the country. He stated that the Nigerian people deserve to enjoy the principles and dividends of democracy and that he is willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the party’s unity and the wellbeing of the people.

Ameh Ebute also highlighted the ongoing power struggle between the leadership of the APC in Benue and the governor since June 2023. As an experienced elder within the party, he believes that he can play a unifying role and bring the party together.

The political landscape in Benue has been fraught with tension, and the suspension of these members is a clear indication of the internal struggles within the party. As the situation continues to unfold, it is evident that efforts are being made to address and resolve the issues in order to ensure the smooth functioning of the legislative process and the unity of the party.

It is imperative for the party to come together and find common ground in the interest of the people of Benue. As the dynamics of the political situation evolve, it is important for all stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and work towards a resolution that serves the best interests of the state and its citizens.
